Each parent believes his or her child is a genius to a certain extent. We can see all the ways in which our children excel and know they can succeed in the areas that spark their interest. However there are other children who will shine in specific areas from a young age.

Between two to five percent of children can be classified as gifted. These children often demonstrate the same traits, which can help you determine whether your child may be gifted. The indicators of being gifted can begin right from birth. As a baby, gifted children are often very alert,  sleeping very little during the day. They can be early movers, rolling over, crawling or walking before the average milestones.

When young, gifted children display long periods of concentration when reading books or participating in an activity. They can be very proficient in amusing themselves. Their thirst for knowledge is immense, and the “why” stage where everything you do is followed by a question from your child, can begin at an early stage.

Gifted children often become fascinated with a topic and eagerly devour any information they can find on the topic. For instance a gifted child may spend hours finding out information about dinosaurs, finding out more than most resource sections in a local library! This is in part due to their ability to remember large amounts of information without being exposed to it over and over again.

A gifted child is often an elaborate playmate, who will make highly involved rules up for games with their friends. They can be detailed storytellers and enjoy play acting a variety of roles. Language can either come early or late. If a gifted child is a late talker, their first words are often part of complete sentences. Both early and late talkers quickly develop an extensive and sophisticated vocabulary, and are confident in communicating with a varied range of age ranges – from infants to adults.

This language development can flow on to their reading. Gifted children often teach themselves to read after having books read to them frequently by their caregivers. The emotional development of a creative child can be sensitive and in need of a little nurturing. Gifted children can often display highly creative and artistic talents, but this can also mean they are more likely to have issues with perfectionism and high self expectations. They may come across as overly sensitive or emotional especially when faced with changes in their routine.

If you believe your child is gifted, try to get them assessed professionally. However try not to place too many expectations on their achievement. Gifted children can often make sporadic progress, waiting until they are ready for each stage. They are also often only gifted in some areas, and can even be delayed in others.

As with any child, it is so important to meet all of your child’s needs – not just their intellectual ones. Hen you will raise a child that not only has a gift, but knows how and when to use it.
